Songlines

Information

Songlines will research and map cycling routes across Leicester in partnership with Cycling volunteers, Cycling Groups and their membership, constructing a wiki-type online database from contributors.

USERS

Ultimately users will then be able to make the uploaded results available to ordinary mobile phone users, without the need for satnav devices. The project will test a combination of technologies for mobile phone based location detection.

ART

Songlines will commission virtual and located artworks across the city for walkers and cyclists, as a pilot for a larger proposal for virtual city artworks, which can be delivered by the location-sensing as audio, visuals or text.

FORMS

These artworks may be relevant to specific landmarks and locations on the routes. They could include texts, verbal responses, site-specific art, music, songs, rap, poetry, virtual sculptures and digital installations. They are intended to be available to many users of all age ranges and get people on their bikes.

PARTICIPATE

We are after your particular routes and comments on both the road conditions, access, surface problems, traffic flow and anything else you wish to record. Later on in the project you may be able to record andadd your own podcasts or digital artworks to entertain and inform cyclists and walkers via the website. You will need proof of identity (Driving Licence or Passport) once you have been selected to take part and are directed to pick up your equipment.

The project will use community volunteers drawn from Sustrans membership to test a combination of three locative technologies adapted for mobile phone platforms. Namely Image processing and data matching, GPS and Bluetooth beacons. All technologies are within the capabilities of an emerging generation of mobiles. This proposal exploits all these facts to explore social use and participation with emergent technologies of location sensing. There are three proposed stages to the project: 1 The specificati..

Songlines

This is a collaborative proposal with Sustrans. The project will work with a combination of mobile phone based GPS and photo-recognition software to encourage and enhance the experience of cycling or walking in urban environments.

First, we propose to research and map cycling routes across Bristol and Leicester in partnership with Sustrans and their membership, constructing a wiki-type online database from member contributors. Sustrans will then be able to make the uploaded re..
