A prototype mobile film-making experience by Jackie Calderwood for visitors to the Bristol Festival, September 2009, developed whilst resident at the Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol. Supported by the Bristol Festival and Watershed.
Ambience featured short films by 25 local filmmakers - from professional filmmakers to people making their first animated slideshow - and music from 6 bands who had submitted to the festival. Ambience aimed to explore the relationship between individual mobile small-screen playback and public big screen playback, between artist and author, participant and performer. Festival goers loaned a PDA and headphones, selecting music to listen to as they explored the festival site. They could choose where and when to stop and play back a short film, uniquely compiled through the route of their walk, drawing from the database of submitted films. Different 'edits' of the films and soundtrack also played on a large screen in the festival site.
Jackie hopes to develop Ambience to include other locations, trialling interaction between communities.
